While the power difference between the Ferrari 458 Italia and Ferrari 599 GTO is around the 100 hp mark, both cars are incredibly close in straight-line acceleration as the following video shows.
Filmed at the always awesome Unlim 500+ races in Russia, the following clip shows a stunning black Ferrari 458 Italia racing a red Ferrari 599 GTO and the result is actually a lot closer than you would think considering the power difference. Understandably, the 599 GTO comes out on top crossing the one mile mark in 28.860 seconds at a top speed of 294.59 km/h. By comparison, the 458 Italia clocks a very respectable time of 29.063 seconds at 283.68 km/h!
The clip concludes with a nice one mile drag race between the 599 GTO as well as a potent Mercedes-BenzML 63 AMG tuned to deliver 700 hp!

Ferrari Service and Repair Bay Area - Driving a Ferrari 288 GTO - Zucchi Motorsports Sonoma - 707-334-3700


John Krewson drove a Ferrari 288 GTO for R&T's 51 Coolest Cars of the Last 50 Years. The piece he wrote was published in the March/April issue, but that's not the whole story—Executive Editor Sam Smith went with him and also got to drive the car. His brief thoughts are below. This isn't a standard review or even a quick drive piece, as we didn't get that much time in the car and the roads weren't the greatest. This is just a snapshot of what it's like to spend time with one of the coolest Ferraris ever built.
We showed up to drive both an F40 and a 288 GTO. The F40 was broken—this is apparently quite common with F40s—and needed some part to start, and said part was not available in time. But the 288 ran. ("The 288 always runs," said the owner. Of course it does.) I was a little disappointed, but really, I wasn't that disappointed. How can you be cranky when the consolation prize is still fantastic? How do you solve a problem like "Wah, My Ferrari Drive Today Will Be Merely Amazing Instead of Mind-Dorkingly Transcendental?"
You don't. You shut up, you love it, you play with the clackety shift gate at stoplights and giggle softly, because 288 GTO.

This is an interesting car. The 288 was built to take Ferrari into the Group B rally championship, the balls-out FIA class that produced cars like the Ford RS200, the Lancia 037, and the Renault 5 Turbo. Group B cars were mean, feisty things, all motor and short of wheelbase. They were amazing, fast, deeply functional. Also, they killed people. They represent one of the last great leaps of modern motorsport—one of the last moments where speed outweighed reason.
Group B was canceled before the 288 saw factory-backed competition, so Ferrari simply carried on producing the car. It was a homologation special that never homologated anything. From 1984 to 1985, you could buy one of these things and rest assured in the knowledge that you were driving something batshit in a time when Ferrari did not do batshit. It did art, occasionally slow, not always pretty, not always dramatic. The 288 was not slow, nor was it ugly. It was basically an ingot of pure drama dipped in a coat of absurdity and turbo lag.

Chiefly, it didn’t seem that weird. To a layman, the 288 looks like a mildly tweaked 308 GTB. It is not. Its 2.8-liter, 400-hp twin-turbo V-8 is mounted fore-aft; the 308's naturally aspirated eight is mounted transversely, or left-right. The chassis was made from steel tubes, with a few Kevlar-fiberglass honeycomb panels; the 308 was essentially an ordinary unibody. (Stretching the definition of ordinary, but still.) And the 288 went 189 mph. This was enough to make it the fastest production car on earth until the Porsche 959 came along, but the GTO's purpose wasn't straight-line speed. It was built to rip through the woods on dirt roads with two determined, possibly imagination-free people sitting inside.
But enough details. We pulled the car out of the garage, someone started it, and it sat there, idling. Unlike most Ferraris, 288s don't howl or grunt or snort. They just kind of whoosh and groan and produce sexy Italian steamship noises. Idling, a 288 sounds like a very pretty washing machine with a sore throat. And you don't mind, because you're standing there staring at the fender vents and wondering how big your balls have to be to haul ass through the forest in something like this.

I drove the car for around 15 minutes, and I have an answer: massive. The turbo lag is manageable, and the car feels smaller than it is. This is partly because the blackened cockpit seems to shrink around you, partly because the A-pillars are tiny and lean up toward your head and the roof feels like an ill-fitting hat. But you drive, and you drive, and you drive, and you start to think that the car is just an odd little 308. The pedals are strangely shaped and in a weird place. The steering wheel is old-school Italian, angled up and too far away unless you set the seat close to it, at which point the pedals are essentially in your lap. The power delivery is predictable, easy, but laggy enough that the car feels faster than 400 hp. You become comfortable with it, and then you toe a bit too much into the boost and it turns into a tail-happy weirdo with far too much soul and this kind of grumbling exhaust note that just begs you to do silly things.
You don't do silly things, of course, unless you own the car. The average 288 is worth around $1 million. But you think about it.
A lot.

John Krewson loves the four square lights in the 288's nose. I don't. Honestly, I don't even like the way the 288 looks. It's too period in places but not "disco" enough in others, to borrow a term from the Brits. And the GTO name bugs me, even if it's sort of right—to me, the GTO is one car, the 250, and no more. But Jesus H. Tapdancing Fark. This thing is great. It's friendly but eminently fearsome, drivable but perfectly involving. I want. I want, I want, I want.

Before heading for Budapest and the Hungarian Grand Prix last year, Fernando Alonso had the opportunity to assess for himself the very latest phase of development of the quickest car ever produced in Maranello for everyday road use, not just exclusively on track; the LaFerrari. Today, we present a video made at the time: judging from his efforts, Fernando enjoyed every one of the 963 horsepower on offer from the combination of the V12 engine (800) and the electric motor (163) which powers the first hybrid car to come through the gates on Via Abetone Inferiore. Along with his team-mate Felipe Massa, the Spaniard was involved right from the start in the project and even on this occasion he contributed valuable insights to the team of engineers and test drivers involved in bringing to life and developing this extraordinary car.

The mountain people gathered outside the trattoria. The school leaked adolescent boys. The thin man from the tire shop closed his door and walked down the cobbled hill. The old dowager bent steeply over her walking stick and hobbled over; those already assembled parted to allow her through.
They know their Ferraris up here in Zocca, perched high in the Apennine Mountains along the spine of Italy. They should, since Maranello is only a half hour away and the narrow, tortured road that leads here is a favorite of Ferrari test drivers.
The locals know instantly that the 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO parked with insouciance at the front door of the trattoria (at the pleading of the chef himself) is out of the ordinary. And they couldn't be more right.
This is the fastest road-going Ferrari ever built — a lightweight, V12-powered coupe that is a masterpiece of competition-style detailing. When told, there's an assembled intake of breath from the crowd.
Even the crooked old woman knows that this car is special, even for Ferrari.
Living Up to the Legend
Even almost 50 years later, the legend of the Ferrari 250 GTO endures, a story of dominance by an Italian sports car that has never been equaled and one still compelling even after all those Formula 1 championships.
The 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO also has its connection with the racetrack, as the car began as the 599XX, the track-only version of the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano available for track-day hire by Ferrari clients at rates that would make you faint. And though the Ferrari 599 GTO is the street-legal version of the 599XX, Ferrari executives still expect this car to rarely stray from the confines of a racing circuit. And why not, since at Ferrari's test track at Fiorano, the 599 GTO is a second faster than the Ferrari F430 Scuderia, not to mention the mighty Ferrari Enzo.
As you'd expect, there's plenty of power, with the DOHC 5999cc V12 pumping out 671 horsepower at 8,250 rpm. There's also the sheer, crushing strength of 457 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 rpm.
There's not much mass to move around, as the 3,538-pound GTO is 220 pounds lighter than a 599 GTB, thanks to thinner-gauge bodywork and thinner windows. Even the exhaust has been hydroformed to reduce wall thickness from 1.5mm to 0.8mm and thus shave away 29 pounds. Meanwhile, the interior has been stripped, while the aero additions are built from carbon fiber.
This car has been designed to get where it's going in a hurry. The single-clutch, automated manual transmission has shorter gear ratios than the conventional 599 and the shift intervals come at 60 milliseconds. The car's top speed is 208 mph, making this the fastest Ferrari street car ever.
Cockpit, Not Cabin 
The lightweight carbon-clad door flings open to reveal a two-seat cabin stripped of its luxury. There's artificial suede instead of leather and the racing-style Sabarth seats have carbon-fiber shells. At the same time, the 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO has a radio, though plenty of people would consider any music other than that made by the V12 to be sacrilege. Aside from the air-conditioner (which is loud and struggles to keep the temperature down in the late spring heat), that's it for luxuries.
There's an old-fashioned ignition key for this old-fashioned, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe, and once you hit the start button on the steering wheel, the fuel pumps whirr for a long moment before the starter motor defeats the 11.9:1 compression ratio and the V12 lets loose a high, sharp raaap before settling down to a gentle idle. Of course, the gentleness of the idle depends on where you set the steering wheel's manettino. If the knob that determines the chassis calibration is on either Low Grip or Sport, it's a gentle idle. In Race, CT-off or CST-off modes, it's aggressive, eager.
It's a doddle to roll out of driveways despite the car's lower ride height, and the single-clutch automated manual lets you trickle around town with more dignity than robotized manuals usually allow. And so we're off.
Red Alert
It doesn't take much straight road to understand what they've done to the engine and gearbox. The first time you stand on the throttle, the gentle burble erupts into a ferocious, seamless howl of anger. There won't be a flurry of wheelspin or tire smoke, because the GTO is too sophisticated to think that's the fastest way. Once you've dialed up the launch-control mode, it will instead punch off the line with j-u-s-t a trace of wheelspin and, 3.4 seconds later, the car has smashed beyond 100 km/h (62 mph). Within 9.9 seconds, you're going 200 km/h (124 mph).
There's plenty of trickery within the engine to boost its output, notably a reduction in engine friction by 12 percent to create 16 hp out of nothing. The tiny piston skirts are coated in graphite; the cam lobes have a super-smooth finish and diamond-hard carbon coats the tappets. The crankshaft has been reshaped to reduce power-sapping turbulence in the crankcase and the aluminum intake manifold comes from the 599XX.
You might forget all of the engine technology every time you stand on the throttle, but with 8dBA more sound entering the cabin, you won't forget the 6-to-1 exhaust headers or the way the induction noise rises to keep pace with the exhausts as the revs climb.
Never Mind the Subtlety
The 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO has had all of the functions of its electronic safety net developed in unison with a new, faster ECU, so it feels especially precise and useful even when the electronics intervene. A second-generation carbon-ceramic braking system from Brembo matches the carbon-ceramic rotors with carbon-ceramic pads. Forget about subtlety, Ferrari's test drivers say; just stand hard on the pedal and keep pushing.
Out on the mountain passes, the GTO proves itself to be not only faster than the 599 but more stable as well. The way the rears hook up is ferocious and the grip at the front end feels unending. The GTO is not Porsche-like in the way it turns into corners, because the steering effort itself is too light and the feedback it gives feels reactive, rather than proactive. But the GTO is 20 percent quicker to react to the wheel than the 599 GTB Fiorano, and wherever you point it, the GTO goes.
Map all of this knowledge together, and the result is a mind-bending array of corner exit, short straight (no matter how long it actually is), a braking point much later than it looks and then enough midcorner grip to hurl the wax out of your ears. And the GTO does it all while throwing each of your senses into turmoil.
Your ears are assaulted, because the GTO attacks its rev limiter as though it would like nothing better than to smash it into oblivion for restraining this unburstable V12 masterpiece. Even as you're thrilling to the changes in timbre and tone and depth — from a profoundly deep bass at 2,000 rpm that promises impending violence to an irrepressible scream at 8,000 rpm — you're also marveling that the sound and vibration have an essential harmony. Meanwhile, you struggle in vain to keep everything in your peripheral vision from losing shape and dissolving into a mass of colors.
The Physical Dimension of Speed
It's your body that registers the lasting impression of the GTO's performance, and not just because the blistering acceleration is like a kidney punch every time you go near the throttle in the first three gears. Instead, it's the cornering grip. Few road cars have ever boasted so much, and it feels consistently available here, a virtue of the car's front-engine layout. Moreover, such a powerful braking system with the promise of consistency unaffected by heat also helps you to trust this astonishing missile, and the car rewards that trust with an agility that belies its size.
Out of the mountains and back at the Fiorano test track, it doesn't take long to figure out the usefulness of the Race mode for the chassis control. If you try to drive without the electronics, this car is a giggle generator, impossible to control. The absolute fastest way to drive the GTO is with the Race mode on, which opens up the bypass valve in the exhaust but moves the magnetorheological dampers, the brakes, the skid and traction control, the gearbox and the throttle settings to maximize every scrap of grip.
The Race mode makes the engine note drone dreadfully on a constant throttle and the chassis throws you around when it hops at the rear as the stability control fights for traction out of corners. The shifts come with ridiculous speed, but they can also hurt at low revs.
Altogether, the Race mode is simply magnificent on the track, with those astonishing Brembos laughing at the idea of fade and smashing the front aero splitter against the asphalt. So you tip it in toward the apex and the GTO snaps its head like a midengine car, and then you can just nail the throttle on the exit. If you're on the right line and steering smoothly, the F1-derived stability control will feed in exactly as much drive to the tires as they can handle. And you will not get out of corners any faster using your own judgment, even if you're Fernando Alonso himself.
It's the 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO. As in GTO. As in legend.

Look, Ferrari, your latest line of cars is arguably the best looking group of prancing stallions since the early 1970s. Even the rather dull California has gotten some attention, thanks to the new California T. But this, the Ferrari F from Ugur Sahin Design, is just better.

Believe it or not, that is based on a 458 Italia. It's like the designer has taken the very best aspects of the Pagani Huayra, Jim Glickenhaus' P4/5 and the Ferrari LaFerrari and combined them into one amazing package. We think it's positively stunning.

Now, obviously, there are some aspects that wouldn't work for a production car. For example, those rear blind spots are probably huge. But when a car looks this good, who really cares? In fact, we'd be willing to designate this Ferrari as the best looking car Ugur Sahin has penned, which is high praise indeed.

The first thing you learn is that it doesn't usually rain in Spain, but when it does, it's the sort of rain that requires you to be more Captain Nemo than Ayrton Senna. And that's when you figure out how a McLaren 650S is as a submarine, not a car.
 
When it does rain in Spain, it stays mainly in the plain.
 
(Full Disclosure: McLaren invited me to sunny Spain to drive the new 650S. Sunny southern Spain where it hadn't rained in months. Except the two days I was there. You know the saying: The rain in Spain stays mainly around the area where I am in Spain.)
 
The second thing you learn is that the 650S is equipped standard with aggressive Pirelli P-Zero Corsa rubber that will provide a "new level of dry weather performance."
 
The third thing you learn is that when the roads are covered in water, a light touch of the throttle in the new 650S, which has far more torque than a 12C, will result in a terrifying drive mode that has the rear end step out in a straight line and nearly shoot you into opposing traffic. It's the perfect cure for constipation.

The fourth thing you learn after you've sufficiently soiled your pants is that leaving the car in automatic with normal drive modes for both powertrain and suspension makes the 650S a comfortable cruiser that is fine going up a slick mountain road behind a few vans.
 
The fifth thing you learn is that if you sarcastically mention to McLaren brass that the F1 team could "really use a title sponsor" you'll get a response that uses a version of British sarcasm that is either incredibly dry and joking in reply or full of disdain for you and all you stand for.

The sixth thing you learn is that McLaren's internal naming structure begins with P. The internal P1 became the McLaren F1. The internal P11 became the MP4-12C and the internal P12 became the McLaren P1. The internal code for 650S is the P11M. Yes, M for modified. But don't call this the 12C Speciale. McLaren is clear on that. This isn't a stripped out racer, it's a step up from the 12C in performance that can still be a daily driver.
 
The seventh thing you learn is that Spain's Ascari Circuit has 26 corners. McLaren is allowing about six laps per person. That is not enough to learn a circuit this complex. Oh, and it's greasy thanks to the rain.
 
Having played in on Gran Turismo, I couldn't imagine trying to drive it for the first time in real life in a supercar in the rain. That track is horrid, and has no flow. It's like they took a bunch of the most difficult corners in the world added a few straightaways, and said "done!" with no thought or planning whatsoever. I'm surprised you survived.
 
The eighth thing you learn is that the rear window on the 650S Spider can be put down independently of the top. Do this and do it often. The sound is old school V8, nearly Cosworth DFV levels of ecstasy.
The ninth thing you learn, once you have some kind of bearing on where the Ascari Circuit goes, is that the 650S is not slow. It gets to 60 from a standstill in 2.9 seconds. It hits 124 MPH in 8.4 seconds. The power increase over the 12C is 25 horsepower up to 641 (650 PS) and it has 500 pound feet of torque that makes for increased response in the low end that runs all the way to redline. It has a power to weight ratio of 493 hp per metric ton. Yeah. It's fast.
 
So it's 2.9 0-60 with launch control. That's useless information. Nobody uses launch control on the street (well, if you're a twat then perhaps). So, with that being said, what's the real 0-60 of this car?
The tenth thing you learn is that launch control is still a dastardly, manic beast in the 650S. Push the launch button, hold your left foot on the brake, go flat on the gas, let the boost build, and then get off the brake. The sheer thrill will make you laugh like a mad man. Don't close your eyes while laughing like said mad man. You'll crash the car... probably straight into a wall.P

The eleventh thing you learn, now that you're out on track, is the chassis is 25 percent stiffer and the suspension geometry is revised. The 12C is no slouch, but the adjustments have made turn in on the 650S quicker and more positive. It just darts to the apex. Steering is perfectly weighted with a ton of feel. I'd go as far as to say this might be the best steering out there today. It's also involving. The 650S was designed to make the driver feel more a part of the experience than the 12C did when it first came out. I thought everyone was wrong about the boring-ness of the 12C, but the 650S is even more involving and fun than I remember its little brother being.
 
The twelfth thing you learn is that the A pillar is too large. It blocks left side apexes from your view. It's not ideal. A thinner pillar would make the car even better.
 
The thirteenth thing you learn is that the drive modes for suspension and powertrain have been better differentiated than in the 12C. Sport is more at home on road and Track is the way to go on a track. Body roll still exists in sport, but not in track. It's flat and level. And transitions in fast corners. Holy crap. This is a road car on street tires, it shouldn't change direction like this, especially on a greasy race track. It just does what you tell it to. Like it's your slave. Which it technically is, I guess. Since you own it.
 
The fourteenth thing you learn is that the air brake is no longer just an air brake, it's now active aero. It can adjust to provide more downforce in corners and stall to give you more speed on the straights.

The fifteenth thing you learn is that the braking of the 650S is disgustingly good. It's braking so good that it makes you actually hate it. The 12C would cut in ABS a bit earlier than you'd like under a hard stop. Not so here. It's not very active, it comes in late, and if you think you've overshot a corner, you haven't. The braking is stable at the limit, with no real drama or movement. The standard carbon ceramic brakes are up there as the best ever.
 
The sixteenth thing you learn is that you should keep your eye out in the mountains for goats with giant testicles. We turned around twice to get this picture. Cause yeah, those balls were huge.P
The seventeenth thing you learn is that the interior is covered with Alcantara aka its been touched by God. There's also an optional carbon seat. It's lightweight and tight, which is good. It doesn't have an adjustable rake, which isn't all that comfy for a long journey. Spec your seats based on what you're going to use the car for. The McLaren MP4-12C is already an unbelievable driving experience and one of the fastest cars money can buy.
 
The eighteenth thing you learn is that I was told by McLaren engineers last year that the 12C would get more power in 2014 and then had it promptly denied by public relations. Well, this is the car with more power. So technically, the 12C didn't get more power...
 
It's a maniacally good car, the 650S. But what did you expect? The 12C sat at the top of our leaderboard for the last year and half in both coupe and spider forms (Well, until the Porsche 918 Spyder came around). The 650S is better, and, at $265,500 base price for the coupe, $280,225 for the spider, more expensive as well.
McLaren's brand ethos of a car that can be used everyday doesn't lead them to go the stripped out, hardcore route with a more powerful car, but I wish they did. This thing would be unreal with the interior stripped out.

A promise that McLaren Automotive made when they started out is that they'd have a new car or variant every year. The 650S is what's new for 2014. McLaren says it doesn't replace the 12C, but as of right now, 12C production is shut down, replaced with the 650S. That's mainly because McLaren has a small assembly line and needs to allocate resources where it can. But I'm ok if this gets rid of the 12C.
 
And that's because the 650S makes the super advanced 12C already look obsolete. Just imagine what the next version of this car will be?

Great racing history including a first at the Japanese Grand Prix and another first at the Australian Grand Prix with Gerhard Berger. Given to Gerhard Berger by Ferrari and rebuilt with all updates before delivery! Of the seven F1/87s built six survive and are with private collectors, proof of the car’s durability and usability. While it is hard to describe any F1 car with 960 bhp at 11,500 rpm as “user–friendly”, the 1987 Ferrari Turbo cars are the last of the F1 cars that do not require a small army of mechanics to start or operate. This car can be operated with a single experienced mechanic, can be programmed for a long engine life, and with a 6–speed manual, the transmission is almost bullet–proof, unlike the later hydraulic–electronic transmissions.
